Independent media is necessary in India, as traditional media houses bow to political pressure and are unable to challenge the regimes.

For the businessmen who run these media houses, it is imperative to keep good relations with the governments and hence it is impossible to let their own newspapers or TV channel criticise the government and its policies non-stop.

The gap is thus being filled, as independent journalist-driven initiatives have come forward. These are The Wire, NewsClick, Newsbits.in, TwoCircles.Net, TheNewsMinute, NewsCentral, Newsd, The NewsMinute and Scroll among the most famous ones.

Most of these news sites are run by journalists. Hence, the focus is on news, stories and real issues. It is a good sign that the hold of businessmen and politicians is weakening on media. The websites that have Facebook pages and Twitter handles have huge reach.

The future is journalist-driven media in India. And that's a positive sign.
Arnab Goswami's TV channel Republic has been launched.

From the very first day, it is clear that the channel aims to to be the English version of rabid right-wing Hindi channel Sudarshan TV.

In fact, Goswami's ideological slant is known for a longtime.

Known for his right-wing agenda, he had created his own signature style--not allowing guests to speak and shouting, humiliating others in the studio.

The high-decible debates and shouts brought him TRP.

Initially, he tookup coal scam and corruption in commonwealth games,

But later when BJP government came to power, he stopped attacking government and instead began targeting opposition. University and college students were targeted, defamed and made enemy in the eyes of nation.

Finally, he was made to leave the channel. With the backing of BJP leader, he has now started Republic. Clearly, the fight is between TimesNow and Republic as to which will pursues the extreme right-wing agenda with more ferocity.
India media journalism review criticism Delhi watchdog Mumbai English Hindi Urdu scribe reporter newspaper channel scribe Indian Media Hindustan Pakistan Delhi Mumbai Star Ajtak print Indian Express
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14109441.post-74135035044241394282017-04-10T06:41:00.001-07:002017-04-10T06:46:13.974-07:00Dirty journalism: How Aroon Purie's India Today group channel Aaj Tak propagates falsehoods, publishes fake stories

Once Aroon Purie's India Today group commanded respect.

Today it is reduced to spreading fake stories and propagating falsehoods.

Imagine, the level to which the journalistic standards of this group has fallen--Aaj Tak carries the false story about a Saudi mufti's purported fatwa that a man can eat his wife or her body parts.

It was a satirical take in a magazine and when it was picked up by mainstream media's online sites, it was refuted.

The government and the mufti also came out and said that it was absolutely wrong.

In fact, even the India Today group's DailyO had long back published that it was a false report. LINK. Still, Aaj Tak carried it once again. Aajtak's website gets hits in millions.

Also, Aaj Tak has millions of followers on Facebook. That, a supposedly mainstream newspaper can go to such level just to garner 'hits', is shocking. It tells you about the situation of journalism and journalists in 21st century India.

Hope, Aroon Purie and his management realises that they have hired people who can't distinguish between rumours and news. That, people who don't understand the sanctity of the written word, need to be ousted from the profession.

Else, it is doomed. Once credibility is hit, it is very difficult to restore it. Time for Aaj Tak-India Today to take a decision. Aaj Tak should apologise and acknowledge that it made a mistake. That's the least it can do.
India media journalism review criticism Delhi watchdog Mumbai English Hindi Urdu scribe reporter newspaper channel scribe Indian Media Hindustan Pakistan Delhi Mumbai Star Ajtak print Indian Express
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14109441.post-4339333947056344912017-02-17T11:34:00.001-08:002017-02-17T11:40:35.352-08:00Zee News: Subhash Chandra's TV channel loses credibility owing to fake, biased reports

It should be a cause of worry for Subhash Chandra that his TV channel has not only lost its credibility but has become 'news' for all the wrong reasons.

Media houses are known for their slants and their tilt towards political parties.

But over the years Zee News' excessively biased reporting and the jingoist rhetoric has turned it into a joke. Rajat Sharma's India TV is also known for its leanings but Zee News has become a propaganda machine.

From its anchors' involvement in extortion to the channel's attempt to defame JNU students by telecasting doctored clips, the channel's reporting has gone from bad to worse. In fact, it is giving serious competition to Sudarshan News, these days.

READ: Under fire for airing doctored video, Subhash Chandra speaks up

Zee network was India's first private TV channel that was launched more than two decades ago.
It should bother Chandra that the channel has suffered incalculable harm. Unfortunately, a Rajya Sabha nomination was enough for Chandra to abandon all ethics of journalism.

The photograph accompanying this report shows a programme that was aired on Focus TV. It terms Zee news owner and anchors as 'Khabron ke besharm saudebaz' i.e. 'Shameless brokers of journalism'.

Will Chandra wake up? It's already too late for him and his channel.

Telegraph, the Kolkata-based English daily is known for its unique headlines.

But on Friday, the newspaper made headlines--for the worst possible reason.

The paper owned by Ananda Bazar Patrika [ABP] group, sacked hundreds of journalists.

The news spread like wildfire among the journalist community in the country.

Print media is going through bad times in India. English papers have been closing their editions. Many papers have retrenched staff and several others are planning to give the pink slip to journos. Outlook report says that 700 employees were laid-off.

Demonetisation gave an opportunity to the media barons to justify their action--retrenching the staffers. Hindustan Times shut its Bhopal, Ranchi and Kolkata editions recently apart from closing many bureaux.

HT management's decision was weird because the paper was not in loss. But now another major newspaper going in for job cuts, sends a strong message. Other smaller groups may also follow suit.

This is bad for journalism as there will be fewer people on the ground to report. As profession, journalism was never lucrative, except for a few, but at least one could run household. Now even that is going to be difficult.

Clearly, bad times ahead for journalism and journalists. This will have affect on our democracy also, which remains strong if the press is strong. If the fourth estate is weakened, the voices of people won't reach others--the government and the citizens.
India media journalism review criticism Delhi watchdog Mumbai English Hindi Urdu scribe reporter newspaper channel scribe Indian Media Hindustan Pakistan Delhi Mumbai Star Ajtak print Indian Express
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14109441.post-92113783708537896422017-01-31T12:00:00.000-08:002017-02-05T16:51:29.391-08:00Why Sudhir Agarwal's project failed: Dainik Bhaskar's English daily DB Post fails to make a mark

Dainik Bhaskar group's English newspaper DB Post would soon complete one year. But the paper has failed to create any stir in Madhya Pradesh.

If it made news, it was for the wrong reasons. Dozens of journalists quit the paper soon after joining it. Till now more than 50 journalists have left the newspaper.

The paper has achieved circulation in Bhopal city because of promotional scheme at the launch time. It is also given in place of Bhaskar's Hindi pullout, however, in terms of impact the paper has failed to make any mark.

WHY DB POST PROJECT FAILED?

Long back, Bhaskar used to have an English daily named 'Bhaskar'. It was later converted to National Mail, which was shut down in 1999-2000.

While National Mail commanded respect and was a full-fledged newspaper, the 10 page DB Post has performed even more poorly.

There are many reasons for DB Post's failure. As Bhaskar is a market leader in Hindi, it was felt that English daily would be able to get a good circulation due to existing Bhaskar network and the group's aggressive marketing.

THE PAPER THAT HAS NO EDITORIAL PAGE: UNIQUENESS OR FOOLISHNESS

But the paper didn't come out as an English paper. It was more like English version of a Hindi newspaper. It bears the stamp of a local Hindi newspaper's English version, not an independent English paper.

This has been its biggest drawback from the beginning. As part of the promotional scheme, it reached homes of many Bhaskar readers who were given option that they could get it instead of Bhaskar's other pullout, DB Star.

Editorially, it is a weak newspaper. When Bhaskar takes a stand on an issue or reports it in a way, DB Post reporting--taking up the issue ignored by its Hindi publication or taking a different stand, sends wrong signals.

This becomes a problem when readers are well-aware of newspaper group's policies and stand on particular politicians and parties. The newspaper has no editorial page. Even though editorials may not have great readership, opinion page has its own importance.

ILL-TREATMENT WITH JOURNALISTS!

Secondly, owners seem to have mishandled the entire project. In Bhopal, it is commonly known that Bhaskar owners treat the staff shabbily. But English journalists who weren't used to 'Bhaskar ways' began quitting as they found the work culture 'unbearable'.

The interference from the 'Bungalow', unusual interference of a woman member of the family in editorial affairs and the pressure to do stories as per whims and fancies of the management--overriding the editorial concerns, were not tolerated by journalists. The ten page paper has adequate local coverage but it fails in doing big stories and lacks in-depth coverage.

For Indian media, nothing could have been as bad as this news at the beginning of the New Year.

Lay-offs. India's leading English newspaper, Hindustan Times, has decided to close seven editions.

They include four editions and three small sub-editions in North India.

The decision is not only a big blow to journalism and journalists but also affects the media industry in the long run.

Kolkata, Bhopal, Indore, Ranchi are the editions that are being closed. Three other small editions including Kanpur and Allahabad are being shut.

Reports suggest that more editions could be closed soon. The decision will affect the prestige of the premier media organisation. In an era when journalists are finding it tough to get jobs and lay-offs are common, a media company that was in profit, is closing editions.

This will have a devastating effect on other smaller media groups. No one has clear idea as to why the editions, many of which were nearly 15-20 years old, are being shut suddenly.

This will also affect the image of Shobhana Bhartia, daughter of late KK Birla. She is the executive director of the Hindustan Times group. With hundreds of persons set to lose their jobs and established editions dying, it is nothing less than a taint.

Shishir Gupta, the executive editor of Hindustan Times, was working as a mole for BJP!

The report suggesting Gupta being an informer to BJP president, created a stir in Indian media today.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, asking Shobhana Bhartia, HT's director, if she will sack him.

Gupta is the same journalist whose name had earlier come for his alleged links with an arms dealer.

Then, he was accused of calling the arms dealer, no less than 478 times on phone.

The latest controversy surrounds Gupta's role in providing information to Amit Shah, the BJP president.

Unlike journalists who pose questions or send query through email, here it was information that was sent, so that action could be planned. This was revealed after his email to Shah was obtained through RTI and is part of documents published by Frontline.

Online portal Wire mentions, "In it (email), Gupta draws the PMO and Shah’s attention to “violations” by the AAP government and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"His email set off a series of counter-actions by the PMO over the following months which led, in turn, to an escalation of the turf war between Kejriwal and Najeeb Jung, who was lieutenant governor of Delhi at the time. Jung finally put in his papers on December 22, 2016....".

"Under the subject line “KEJRIWAL AGAINST CENTRE”, Gupta’s email began by noting: “Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal is on course to abrogate all powers of the Centre in NCR with neither the Home Ministry nor the BJP MLAs/Pradesh unit doing anything to contest it,” the Hindustan Times executive editor told Amit Shah and Officer on Special Duty (IT) in the PMO, Hiren Josh.

"The buzz in Delhi Govt is that BJP will do nothing to aggravate issues with Kejriwal due to its impact on forthcoming Bihar poll.” Nowhere in the email does the Hindustan Times executive editor ask a question or seek a response or clarification from Shah or Josh – the way reporters who correspond with officials about stories they are working on normally do."

Sadhvi Deva Thakur who is known for her firebrand speeches is now facing murder charges.

In a marriage function in Haryana, she began firing and this led to a woman's death.

Deva Thakur is now on the run. She has a murder case registered against her.

The Sadhvi, who is a Hindu Mahasabha leader, is known for her inflammatory speeches.

The latest incident has occurred in Karnal in Haryana.

She was invited to the marriage ceremony. She began firing and a gunshot caused the death.

A girl was also injured in the firing. Deva Thakur and half-a-dozen others who accompanied her, had been armed. The marriage function hall owner said that he had informed police as soon as firing began, as this is not allowed.

Deva Thakur had earlier caused controversy when she suggested that Muslims and Christians should be made to undergo sterilisation. She had also said that Hindu idols should be kept in mosques and churches.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi got lessons in journalistic ethics and values at a function in Delhi.

The event was organised to give away the Ramnath Goenka awards for excellence in journalism.

After PM Modi's speech, Jha spoke at length about journalistic practices.

While audiences applauded Jha over his speech, PM Modi was cold and expressionless.

Jha recounted an incident--when a Chief Minister praised an Indian Express reporter's work, Goenka fired the journalist.

"Criticism from the government is a badge of honour for a journalist", he said.

Jha, in his vote of thanks said, "You (PM) also said a few wonderful things about journalists that makes us a little nervous....we have a generation of journalists who are growing up in an age of retweets and likes.."

The speech was applauded among journalists as Jha spoke with conviction. Just when NDTV has been banned for a day, Kashmir Reader has been shut down and journalists who question government are being branded 'anti-national', Jha's journalism class was needed.

Good work, Mr Jha.

The Economic Times headline has drawn lot of attention today.

Four years ago when Mistry had taken over from Tata, the headline was the one in the photograph above:

"Mystery Ends, Mistry Begins'

As Ratan Tata once takes over the company again from Cyrus Mistry, the newspaper gave this headline:

"Mistry Ends, Mystery Begins' [below]

It is not something unusual but it is interesting indeed and has caught eyes. No great wordplay, yet, it has caught eyes.

Simple, yet catchy. On the left, you can see the front pages of the paper on both the days.

The second media revolution has arrived in India.

News websites have emerged as flag-bearers of independent journalism.

This was needed as traditional media was facing criticism for its failure.

Leading newspapers and TV channels were failing in objectivity.

It was being rued that the fourth pillar of democracy was crumbling as journalists were no longer questioning those in the power. Media was accused of toeing 'government line'.

With TRP becoming the sole criterion for news channels, the situation had become even more critical. In the era when 'mainstream media' was losing credibility, the websites have emerged.

These websites are now giving space to hard journalism. There are articles questioning the official position and reports that present the other side of the picture too.

NEWS SITES SHOW THE WAY IN THE ERA OF 'PAID MEDIA'

Not just stories that don't get reported in 'mainstream media', the News websites are carrying special reports, giving space to dissenting voices and opinion pieces--the kind of articles that are not published in leading newspapers or issues not discussed in TV studios.

While terms like 'Presstitutes' were coined, 'credibility became the biggest casualty' in Indian journalism. Journalists had to chose either of the two sides--Manmohan or Modi. Even after the election, there was no change in the situation.

Just when it had become the fashion to say that 'long reports' were out of fashion, narrative style of journalism made a return.

Thanks to these websites. One or two may be agenda-driven but they do provide space to alternative opinions too.

MAJOR WEBSITES KNOWN FOR QUALITY JOURNALISM

Scroll [Scroll.in] was among the first such websites and it has been quite successful. Senior journalist Siddharth Varadarajan's The Wire [Thewire.in] is known for serious, issue-based journalism.

Catch is associated with the Patrika group and it has expanded in a big way.

Similarly, Seema Mustafa's The Citizen [Thecitizen.in] comes with insightful reports, especially, with regard to conflict-prone regions.

JantaKaReporter is a major news portal, which has redefined online journalism in India. DailyO offers insights and opinions.

HuffingtonPost is well-known and among the pioneers in online journalism in the world. Its India edition has grabbed eyeballs.

NewsBits [Newsbits.in] brings reports from Central India--Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states, with special concern for marginalised communities, Dalits, tribals and other under-privileged sections.

Newsd has emerged as another competition for major news websites. It focuses more on the App. NewsLaundry is yet another portal that keeps an eye on media.

Thenewsminute [thenewsminute.com] gives special coverage to Southern India--states that are not given proper attention in 'North-based media'. Twocircles.net is well-established and reports about the marginalised.

There are other websites too. Existing newspapers and magazines like Outlook and Caravan also have high quality content on their websites. With social media proliferating, the reach of the content has also increased.

Clearly, the 'New Media' is the winner.
India media journalism review criticism Delhi watchdog Mumbai English Hindi Urdu scribe reporter newspaper channel scribe Indian Media Hindustan Pakistan Delhi Mumbai Star Ajtak print Indian Express
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14109441.post-23394254122677787682016-10-19T13:06:00.000-07:002016-10-20T13:13:22.066-07:00Targeting Media: J-K government bans Kashmir reader, newspaper forced to stop publication

It's bad news for media. A newspaper has been forced to stop publication in the world's biggest democracy.

The management of the Kashmir Reader was asked to stop printing.

The administration issued an order, which forced the paper to shutdown its operations.

Worse, media is largely silent. Journalists across the country haven't stood in solidarity with the newspaper.

The newspaper has been banned. The decision has been unprecedented. But it has not lead to any outrage. There have been voices condemning the 'arbitrary decision' and demands have been raised to withdraw the ban.

However, most big media houses avoided to cover the story. The closure of a newspaper is not something that can be ignored. It's an emergency situation. The order came when situation in Kashmir had improved relatively.

Quint carried this piece, 'Is Ban on ‘Kashmir Reader’ Daily An Instance of State Repression?'. It quotes the editor Hilal Mir, who says, "The order is vague. It does not mention any article or content that they have found objectionable".

"If there is misrepresentation, specify it, take legal recourse instead of arbitrary methods", he further says. Media watchdog The Hoot has also carried a report, 'A quiet day at Kashmir Reader'. Unfortunately, other media houses ignored the news.

For them, it was not big news, perhaps. And herein lies the tragedy of our times.
India media journalism review criticism Delhi watchdog Mumbai English Hindi Urdu scribe reporter newspaper channel scribe Indian Media Hindustan Pakistan Delhi Mumbai Star Ajtak print Indian Express
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14109441.post-51495986754984647272016-06-05T11:57:00.002-07:002016-06-05T11:57:52.935-07:00Journalist Asad Ashraf takes on 'biased' Times Now anchor Arnab Goswami for terming him terror sympathiser

Journalist Asad Ashraf is all set to sue 'biased' Times Now anchor Arnab Gowasmi.

Ashraf was invited to the channel for a debate, however, Goswami cast aspersions on him when the former began putting across his point.

The journalist who works with Tehelka had questioned authenticity of the a video purportedly released by ISIS.

The video showed a suspect in it, who is liked to Batla House encounter.

However, the moment he expressed his suspicion, Goswami began lashing out at him.

He went on to term Ashraf as an Indian Mujahideen sympathiser. Other panelists too launched an attack on him. Ashraf's microphone was allegedly switched off and Goswami accused him of being a terror sympathiser.

But leading writers, journalists and activists have supported Ashraf. Goswami has lately been accused of pro-Hindutva leanings and of not allowing people with a different point of view to speak in the debates.

He has also been accused of misbehaviour with panelists. Congress leaders have boycotted the Prime Time on Times Now.

Also, many leading intellectuals, writers and academicians have expressed concern over the manner in which the show is conducted.

Panelists are not allowed to speak, if they are opposing Goswami's point of view and the narrative he wishes to propagate. Now, Ashraf intends to send a legal notice to Times Now.
Rahul Shivshankar, the News X anchor, is at the centre of a major controversy.

Shivshankar is facing a very serious charge. He was hosting a programme on Samjhauta Express terrorist attack.

But after interviewing the then SIT officer who had conducted probe, the channel didn't air his interview, at all.

In the interview, the officer had said that right-wing radical Sunil Joshi was involved in the terror attack. He said that hard evidence led the SIT to the group. Joshi was later killed by members of his own group.

But, the TV channel didn't air his opinion. Shocked, the officer wrote a Facebook post, that has now gone viral. Leading journalists have said that the channel seemed to be giving a twist to the Samjhauta Express probe.

As the SIT officer's interview would have gone against the plan, it was dropped. News X channel had taken a strange and dubious stand during the Malegaon blast case too in which Hindu extremists were involved.

When Muslims who were initially framed in the case, were being released, the channel aired stories to suggest that the probe that accused Hindu radicals wasn't right.

This is further proof of how journalistic ethics and journalism are under threat in the country.

Right-wing Hindu extremists were found involved in the bomb blast in which more than 70 persons were killed.
It started soon after the BJP came to power. Times Now, the leading English news channels, was quite harsh on establishment.

The channel's face, Arnab Goswami, took on Lalit Modi, but soon it became clear that strings had been pulled and Goswami was no longer shouting.

Lalit Modi case got a decent burial. India TV audience saw Arnab Goswami in a new avatar.

He was shouting but was no longer attacking the ruling party. This was a clear shift from the past when he attacked UPA regime.

But that was just the beginning. Just like Congress, BJP also has its share of 'bad guys'. But Times Now was no longer raising issues that would show BJP leaders in poor light. The constant target was Congress, once again.

So, either it was Sohrabuddin case or Ishrat Jahan fake encounter, Arnab Goswami was now giving twist to each and every story, in such a way that he ended being on the side of the BJP, saving and 'exonerating' the BJP leaders, while defaming and denouncing others.

While Hindi TV channels like Zee News, India TV and Aaj Tak were toeing the official line, Times Now and News X also joined the race.

It got so ugly that TV anchors were falling on the feet of the ruling party leaders to show how much subservient they are to the party.

They never asked tough questions as to how Maya Kodnani who was sentenced to double life imprisonment for inciting mob to murder innocent women and children, was out of jail on parole in Gujarat.

They didn't question how Babu Bajrangi was suddenly out of jail too. But the worst was yet to come. Goswami's channel now goes all out batting for Hindutva extremists.

The right-wing Hindutva terror network had been busted by ATS under Hemant Karkare, the brave-heart officer who was killed in Mumbai terror attack.

The role of the then ATS officer KP Raghuvanshi was not up to the mark. In fact, he faced allegations of being slow in pursuing these cases.

But Times Now goes to the extent of giving legitimacy to Raghuvanshi, who was accused of botching up investigation in Malegaon and similar other cases.

While blaming BJP or Congress is okay, it is sad to see how Goswami has become a mouthpiece for the RSS, and seems to be driven with a single agenda that is to help the Saffron terrorists' case in all these trials.

This is possible by either creating confusion or spreading misinformation. Times Now is exactly doing this and this is criminal to say the least.

It is shameful to see India's leading English news channel spreading canards and doing disservice to the nation.

Late Hemant Karkare had painstakingly bust the network and cracked the cases. The result was arrest of Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, Lt Col Srikant Purohit, Dayanand Pandey, Samir Kulkarni and many other members of the right-wing extremists' gang.

But, TV channels like Times Now and News X are taking a line that is not just unethical but also shows how journalists have simply become tools to manipulate the opinion and tinker with cases, at the behest of the political masters.

It is an extraordinary situation in India, now as Facebook has repeatedly warned or blocked accounts of writers, activists and intellectuals with sane voices.

But the same Facebook is surprisingly soft on hate speech and accounts that share morphed images, indulge in misinformation and spread communalism.

The latest example is the manner in which Facebook blocked and warned Professor Ashutosh Kumar, after he shared a Navbharat Times post that exposed morphed content that was going viral on the social media website.

An image of a Muslim man who was embracing others, was morphed and a photo of an explosion was added, in it. Now this morphed image was being shared widely. When, Navbharat Times' report that exposed this mischief was posted by Ashutosh Kumar, he was asked to take it down.

Surprisingly, Ashutosh Kumar was told that his account would be shut, and later he was told that his account will be permanently closed.

While there is no dearth of Facebook accounts, mostly in Hindi, that share inflammatory content day in and day out, there is no action on them. These accounts, groups and pages are involved in sharing morphed images and even go to the extent of threats and violence, but Facebook doesn't seem concerned at all.

Read MediaVigil.com post, "Why Facebook gets upset when mischief-makers are exposed?". This is a serious question. Facebook had earlier blocked Dilip C Mandal's account though its official later apologised and restored it.

A possible explanation is that 'organised gangs' are making lot of complaints [report a post] to get accounts that expose their misdeed down, but shouldn't Facebook's officials have the basic understanding that here it is a Navbharat Times news that is exposing hate-mongers.

Or, perhaps, Facebook's staff that is supposed to keep an eye on Hindi content, has soft corner with such hate-mongers and their ideology. Clearly, Facebook's credibility is at stake. You can read Prof Ashutosh Kumar's post.
What's the job of media? It is informing public or distorting facts in order to spread false information?

Ironically, getting hits seems to have become the sole criterion for success in online media.

As there are thousands of websites, the hits will come only when you give bizarre headlines.

RevoltPress, a website, that delivers news in both Hindi and English, has taken this 'bizarre' to an extreme.

Take for example, the news that has been show here along with the post. It wrongly says that Pakistani men marry their own sisters. The headline clearly suggests as if it is incest that is prevalent in Pakistan.

The intro begins with the practice in Islamic world. The fact that an absolutely misleading news is not just published but it's being posted widely in Facebook groups and aggressively pushed, shows that they have no qualms about their brand of 'Yellow journalism'.

Such stories get them HITS, which bring some money in the form of advertisements and also a bit of name for the 'media group'. It today has nearly 1.9 lakh likes (followers) and hence reach of such articles keeps increasing as they keep posting such articles, again and again, with an interval of few days.

As far as the particular misleading post is concerned, the truth is that there are marriages between cousins in Pakistan. But it is common in India too. In many parts of the country, there are marriages among cousins in Hindus. In Andhra, it has been common for the girl to marry her real maternal uncle (mama).

But calling a cousin as 'sister', giving an impression of 'incest' and its prevalence in entire society, is disgusting to say the least. Sadly, journalism is the biggest casualty with the proliferation of such news websites. This is perpetuating false myths, spreading hate and agenda-driven activity that needs to be condemned in the harshest possible words.

A new media watchdog has been launched.

The website has been noticed in a short period because of its incisive commentary and criticism.

The website is www.MediaVigil.com and it also has a Facebook page.

Unlike existing sites, it is more attacking and exposes the corruption in media. The website is in English but it covers English media including newspapers and TV channels.

One of the oldest websites has been TheHoot. In Hindi, Bhadas4media has been a site where journalism-related issues are discussed along with information about journalists joining or leaving the groups.

EditIndia has been among the oldest media watchdogs online. We welcome MediaVigil and hope that it would analyse the work of print and electronic media in an unbiased manner. It has been hacked also, suggesting that it has been doing its job correctly.
Dainik Bhaskar group that runs the second biggest Hindi newspaper in the country has launched an English daily.

After many years, this is the third attempt of the Hindi media group at launching an English paper.

It had a paper, The Bhaskar daily, in English. Later it was re-launched and named National Mail. The paper was closed in 2000.

But now the group has launched its third English paper DB Post. The paper is said to be brainchild of Bhaskar group MD Sudhir Agarwal's wife Jyoti Agarwal.

The launch was subdued. It hasn't created a stir in journalist circles so far. We tried to find but there has been no website or online presence of the newly launched paper. This is surprising as print is accompanied by web these days, even in small publications.

UPDATE: A year later, why DB Post failed to make a mark in Bhopal?

There is no internet presence in the form of Facebook page or Twitter handle. We have found that many journalists have also quit the paper within days of its launch. The reason is that editors with Hindi background were posted and this caused bickering and resentment in editorial.

Some reporters from Dainik Bhaskar have been inducted who write the copy in Hindi and later it is translated. But Dainik Bhaskar is known for its strong marketing tactics. It has to be seen how the paper works and if the group manages to push it aggressively and sell the paper.

Good luck, Bhaskar group.

Just like many news sources, papers and publications are pro-Left or Centrist, there are newspapers and magazines that are pro-Right too.

But, there has been a new phenomenon in Indian media--of hardcore right-wing websites that are not just aimed at furthering the political ideology but can go to any length in misrepresenting facts, even if it entails demonising the 'opponents'.

Just see how 'The Voice of Nation' claimed that Amitabh Bachchan was Jawaharlal Nehru's son. Such propaganda, disguised as journalism, is affecting image of Right-wing media.

These websites give sharp twist to stories, just in order to take forward the Saffron narrative. In process, facts are often ignored or manipulated and one-sided stories are carried.

They provide news differently, so different that they can cloud your vision and even confuse you about any issue. This is extremist right-wing journalism, if we really can it journalism. Media shouldn't manipulate facts and take sides to such extent.

This is doing damage to a healthy right-wing narrative because of the negativity and the zealous nature of these pro-Hindutva media projects that refuses to look at any other side of the picture. It seems that they are aimed just at running defamation campaigns against individuals and groups who are not in sync with their ideology.

Sorry, you may try as hard as you can but you just can't brainwash people. Shouldn't there be a decent and honourable right-wing narrative? Unfortunately, these websites are pursuing Hindutva agenda with such bias that they are affecting the image of the proper right-wing media.

FACTS or FICTIONS

1. Indiafacts is a website that gives the impression that it talks about 'facts'. But it often presents wrong, distorted facts and the commentary is biased. For the gullible reader, it is 'India facts', but the truth is that it is 'India fictions', not 'facts'.

2. 'The Voice of Nation', it seems, can go to any extent in misrepresenting facts. It spreads blatant lies and publishes unconfirmed facts. It is not journalism, at all. Ethics be damned, this seems to be the motto of this website. It even claims that Amitabh Bachchan was Jawaharlal Nehru's son.

3. OpIndia.com is not as reckless as Voice of Nation but pushes right-wing agenda strongly and intelligently. It goes for 'hit-job'. For example, it targets not just opposing politicians but also intellectuals and journalists who are critical of BJP-RSS. By raising petty issues and amplifying them, it provides 'ammunition' to Hindutva cyber brigade that would then target the 'opponents' on Twitter, Facebook and other platforms, citing these links and stories.

4. Swarajya magazine would appear better when compared to the above-mentioned sites. But the online magazine is also clear in its approach. For it too, journalism is fair only when it suits the Right-wing. Facts are presented selectively to support BJP and attack others.

TV channel IBN 7 has claimed that thousands of 'couples are swapping wives' and indulging in sexual orgies at farm houses, homes and hotels with friends and like-minded couples.

The channel has said that in most of these cases not just the husband but the wife also has her consent and sexual relations are established with other couples in front of each other, for thrill and heightened enjoyment.

Thus, nearly 7,000 couples or 14,000 persons are actively engaged in swapping partners for sexual relations, without any hitch or shame--a major change from Indian society where morality reigned supreme and sex was a taboo for ages.

A doctor couple--medical practitioner husband and his physiotherapist wife, told the undercover reporters, who hadn't revealed their identity and had shown interest in joining the 'couple swapping' as part of the sting operation.

How journalist(s) managed to track, meet such couples

The reporters on the story had find such couples, sent them own photographs posing as a newly married couple, and later met to fix and finalise the next move.

Indrajeet Rai, the report, worked on this story. After nearly two months of effort, finding email IDs of couples engaged in swapping partners, the 'journo(s)' managed to meet such couples.

Using WhatsApp, connections were established and photographs were exchanged. The 'reporter couple' also met another couple--an MNC officer and his college teacher wife. They also belonged to Delhi, NCR region.

In kid's presence, couple gives invitation for 'wife swapping'

Shockingly, the couple had a three-year-old child along with them, and in his presence, they kept convincing the undercover reporters that there is no harm and no risk in such relations or open sexual orgies involving partners of each other.

Conversations recorded with hidden camera

The wife (physio) gave open invitation and said that the 'game' is perfectly fine and there will be no problem, if the new couple joins them. With hidden camera, entire conversation was shot and recorded by the journalists.

People from all sections of society getting into deviant sexual behaviour

From upper middle class to middle class, working women to housewife, people of all social strata are now into 'wife swapping'. Though it was believed that it was prevalent in India, the report shows that it has got acceptability among large sections of society.

Under fire for allegedly airing doctored videos during the JNU row, Zee News owner came on his TV channel to clarify his stand.

That police case may be registered against the channel owner or editor(s) for airing the videos may have forced them to go public.

See VIDEO

Chandra said that some people were branding Zee News as 'BJP's channel', which was a wrong perception.

"We are neither Congress' channel, nor BJP's channel. The truth is that we are against fundamentalism of all kind". "We are pro-India", he said.

Chandra said that Zee was being defamed and he was being sent harsh, abusive messages on Twitter.

He went on to name controversial Zee News anchor Sudhir Chaudhary, who was arrested and jailed for allegedly demanding bribe from Jindal group, as a his companion who was also getting similar such messages.

Chandra though claimed that he had grilled a BJP leader too recently and had exposed the party on various issues, he praised Anupam Kher in the same breath. Clearly, Chandra was forced to speak as his channel is accused of airing doctored videos.
Indian TV news is in a state of serious crisis.

Creating false stories, manufacturing rage and tarnishing image of particular people or groups at the behest of powerful lobbies has become the norm.

In process, journalism is the biggest casualty. Ethics be damned, morality thrown off the window. The anchors sit on a pulpit and say who is 'deshbhakt' (patriot) and who is 'deshdrohi' (anti-national).

Arnab Goswami conveniently ignores what happens on the streets and selectively shows what suits him and his political line, calls guests of his choice in the show and doesn't let any alternative opinion come up in the show.

When journalists were being beaten up in the court in Delhi for consecutive days, he wasn't bothered and kept whipping up sentiments over 'nationalism' by taking up a clearly one-sided position. Goswami even has the cheek to talk condescendingly about journalists who took out protest rally.

Sudhir Chaudhary is the face of Zee News. He has faced criminal charges in the case of alleged bribe from Jindal group and had to go to Tihar jail over the allegations. Chaudhary was earlier with Live India channel, which was shutdown briefly when a fake sting-op was aired about a Delhi teacher.

Now Chaudhary runs the channel as mouth piece of the BJP government. It takes a pro-Sangh policy and targets any opposing voice as 'traiter' and 'anti-national'. The channel has perfected the art to twist issues and divert viewers' attention from real issues.

Deepak Chaurasia's channel India News went a step ahead during the ongoing JNU row. The 'video' was shown in which students were raising slogans 'Azadi' but words like 'gharibi se' were suppressed to give the impression that they were talking about Kashmir's freedom.

These are not alone. Anchors and journalists who show you biased news and inflame passions are dime a dozen in Indian media, now.

This is 'supari journalism', as people are targeted because of ideological considerations.

Take for instance, Gaurav Sawant, a right-wing zealot who works as journalist with TV Today. He is known for his clear pro-BJP tilt and goes to the extent of creating fake stories and giving twists to bring communal angle to stories.Zee News' Rohit Sardana is another 'jingoist journalist'.

India TV's Rajat Sharma is a seasoned anchor and though his style is somewhat different, his agenda is also well-known. He has got Padma award recently.

English news channel Times Now has taken a complete turn towards 'right', and has in fact gone to the extent of becoming a BJP mouthpiece.

The channel under Arnab Goswami was always known to have a pro-BJP tilt but ever since Modi government came to power, it has stopped its 'aggressive journalism'.

But when you can't attack the government, who will you shout at? In order to keep the tempo and maintain its TRP, it is now creating villains and targeting them.

The hashtag '#StopAntiIndiaCampaign' is just an example. By terming JNU and its students as 'anti-national', the TV channel is inflaming passions under the garb of its 'nationalistic journalism'.

While Kanhaiya Kumar didn't shout any slogan, he was arrested and booked for sedition. But the same channel remains soft on BJP, RSS and ABVP leaders who have been found involved in anti-national activities, rioting and extremist acts.

Arnab Goswami conveniently ignores right-wing group burning national flag or BJP allies like Akali Dal and PDP trying to save, release convicted terrorists. After, the prime task is to save the BJP and protect it, when it is failing on various fronts.

By diverting attention, creating new issues and inflaming passions, Times Now is cleverly acting as BJP-RSS' agent in the media. It is not alone. Zee News, India TV and many other channels are also doing exactly the same.

The casualty is journalism. Morality and ethics have been abandoned. The sole aim is to act for the Saffron groups. That's 'supari journalism' at its best. History won't be kind to Arnab Goswami and Times Now for shaming the noble profession.
