Sunday edition of TOI sucks!
When you write anything about ToI and if it is critical, many feel it is because ToI is a market leader and the largest circulated English daily so it is probably out of jealousy.
But I am a keen reader of ToI. (How can I avoid the paper when I claim to run a blog on Indian media). The only page I liked in Sunday TOI was the edit-like paged christened 'All That Matters' in the main paper. (The magazine is pure bakwaas. The other day Nona Walia was suggesting how Sex sms-ing can be fun, without bothering to tell reader that if someone takes offence and the adventurer runs out of luck he may go behind bars apart from lot of notoriety if local channel get the story. The article dubbed it exciting without giving a thought to the fact that cases of 292, 293, 294 and 507 can be registered apart from IT Act if the receiving person doesn't like it or feels it is overboard or in place of X, it reaches Y. Such dumb-headed people edit this sunday magazine).
Anyway, I was talking about main paper. The All That Matters page has on the top left the column of Shobaa De. She has hardly written a good piece in years and so Rahul Mahajan and Rahul Gandhi hogging media limelight was nothing special. All this should better be left to columnists who write on media. She wastes space.
The SUNDAY DEBATE that is the lead iteam takes SIX COLUMNS and I don't know if anybody reads it these days except guys in small-towns preparing for their Group Discussions or Interviews in MBA or other sort of exams. This column has outlived its utility with so many debates on tv and everywhere. Please remove it.
The top half is completed by another column, Erratica. Oh, Bachi (Karkaria), she bores. I have nothing against her but this kinda humour is surely passe.
Now I came to the bottom half. The Jug Suraiya Column as he himself claims is the most well-known but least read of columns in Indian journalism and I don't know why it continues like that. Surely there must be a section that likes to flaunt that they read Jug Suraiya and prove their superority. Nothing else. It is B minus.
Then is Swaminomics. Sometimes, once in a couple of months he makes some sense rest is jugglery of data and economics. There is so much data available everywhere that if we just compare anything, say number of radios in India to that in Pakistan, Kuwait, Brazil, Chad and UK, we may deduce something. Or compare population of hens, goats, cows, number of papers or whatever....all available in European and American Factbooks. It is also a column that sucks.
And last but not the least the Chidanand Rajgahtta's Indiaspora. Millions of times he tells that there are so many Indians in US and all going great guns. Fed up, I am sick of all this. How much of our selfconfidence is boosted with the weekly dose that we are good because we are visible in US and we are excelling there and the Indians are havind huldee ceremony or gurbani in Buffalo County or Milwaukee. The whole page sucks. And I am fed of it. It is much refreshing to read DNA. Even HT is better. All other papers are good. But Sunday TOI, it's terribly boring.
DiScLaImEr: They sent 17 notices to Mediaah!. Hope they don't send me any of them tot his poor blogger.;)
